Al-Abbas Islamic Centre, Birmingham Mosque

This project was originally begun whilst working for K4 Architects. After almost 10 in the making, the mosque is now on site and under construction in Balsall Heath, Birmingham. This complex, multi-phased project includes a new is a redevelopment and expansion of current facilities in Balsall Heath. It also includes a new mosque, community & sports facilities and learning spaces. The client for this project is a Shi’a Muslim religious organisation with a vision for an inclusive community facility. Their aim to create a striking example of contemporary architecture that reflects their mission:

‘Creating a spiritual & vibrant community based on the values and practices of the Islamic Shi’a Ithna-Ashari faith by developing the potential of its members, engaging with the wider society and serving the needs of humanity worldwide’.

This project poses unique challenges to the design team, client and contractor alike, accommodating a varied and flexible programme of uses and activities in combination of new and existing buildings. It represents a long-term vision and is carefully phased to allow the community to function throughout the lengthy construction period.

The Architects brief for this Birmingham mosque called for the renewal and expansion of the existing facilities on the proposed site at Clifton Road. The brief was also to integrate the buildings within a Masterplan. We would create a community centre which can serve the members throughout the year and the religious calendar. The scheme proposals for this site include the extension and refurbishment of the existing mosque and Imambara buildings, two new buildings to front Clifton Road and the conversion another building.
