Domestic Extension in Moseley

This project by Atelier 88 Architects is a small domestic extension in Moseley conservation area. The initial brief was to replace a utility room and create a open kitchen with additional living space. The original utility room had several steps down, which we retained. Next, we introduced a new pitched roof with a large rooflight, with the soffit matching the pitch of the roof. This enabled us to achieve a high ceiling with out sacrificing the cosy atmosphere, which was enhanced by adding a wood burner This increased the volume and enhanced the quality of the space. Charred timber cladding provides a contrast to the Victorian masonry of the existing building, and a large picture window provides a visual link to the garden.

Martin brought my rough ideas to life with a set of beautiful drawings. He turned the space that once was a small utility room into a cavernous open plan kitchen extension. Japanese Shou Sugi Ban cladding and a huge square picture window added a slick contemporary addition to my end of terrace house. I am absolutely thrilled with the result and it exceeded my expectations’
